At the end of the musical “West Side Story,” after the guy who was supposed to be the hero has been slain and those who love him are left struggling to make sense of the world, composer Leonard Bernstein tunes his orchestra to the confusion and uncertainty of the moment.

Eighteen years ago Sunday in the big yellow barn on the grounds of Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” played as Michael Long danced in the spotlight with his new bride, Jenn Coldren, at the wedding event of the century.

C.S. Lewis’ Christian beliefs notwithstanding, "A Grief Observed" will connect with anyone who grieves, regardless of their theistic impulses. “Don’t come talking to me about the consolations of religion,” Lewis writes, “or I shall suspect that you don’t understand.”
