Niles Lane

For good luck, Quarryville bowler Niles Lane talks to his ball and gives it a little kiss.

Family, bowling and sports are ingredients for Niles Lane’s perfect game of life.

This U.S. Army veteran, who has a 203 average on the lanes, is a self-professed sports addict. The 40-year Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Steelers fan collects bats, bobble heads, cards and jerseys.

To satisfy his sports appetite, he sends out autograph requests and currently has in excess of 300 signatures, which include such stars as Duke Snider, John Wooden and Johnny Pesky. He also has received a few from some favorite movie stars — Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford.

Not all his autographs are easy to obtain, however. Brett Butler, Curtis Martin and Wayne Gretzky took so long to send their autographs back that the price of the postage on the return cards had increased.

But Lane noted that Martin and Gretzky kindly added the extra two-cent stamp to return them.

Although his attraction for bowling and sports is huge, the biggest smile comes from this Quarryville kegler when he speaks of his family.

Background: Niles, 47, and his wife, Cathy, have four children, James, Austin, Nicole and Kristen, and three grandchildren. The 1984 McCaskey High School grad is employed by SuperValu.

Leagues/averages: Turtle League, 203.

High scores: single, 298; series, 782.

My greatest moment in the sport was: Rolling my 298, as well as spending a few hours with good people at the lanes, every week.

Favorite bowling center: Leisure Lanes; and “a shout out” to the old Lancaster Lanes.

Type of bowling ball I use is: The Sauce/Hammer.

The people who taught me the most are: My junior bowling coaches, who gave me a great start in the sport; and bowlers who are always willing to give tips and advice.

The biggest change that I’ve seen in the sport is: Better equipment.

Great teams have: Members who enjoy being around each other.

Bowling has helped me: Meet a lot of great people.

My interest in the sport began: When I was around 11 and would go with my parents when they bowled in their league.

My secret to success is: To see what line the good bowlers are playing and play the same line, and just trying to be consistent.

I think other bowlers would describe me as: Funny, a little crazy, and intense.

My long-term bowling goal is to: Bowl a 300 before I weigh 300.

My good luck in the sport is: When I talk to my bowling ball and give it a little kiss before throwing a strike.

People would be most surprised to learn that: I enjoy doing housework.

When I’m not bowling you will find me: Spending time with my family or doing sports-related activities — watching it and collecting sport’s autographs and paraphernalia.

The highlights of my life so far are: The births of my children, walking my daughters down the aisle and spending time with my grandkids.
