Whatever the name will be in the long term remains hidden, but on Friday night, the new Frederick franchise in the Atlantic League can be called a winner.
David Kubiak fired 6 1/3 strong innings while Frederick’s third and fourth hitters combined to drive in five runs in a 6-1 win over the visiting Lancaster Barnstormers at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
It was the first win in 14 tries for Frederick while the Barnstormers dropped to 4-9 on the season.
Kubiak (1-1) carried a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning before yielding consecutive doubles to Ariel Sandoval and Trayvon Robinson to score Lancaster’s only run. The bullpen pitched hitless baseball over the remainder of the game.
Frederick pitchers did not walk a batter and struck out nine in the stellar combined performance.
A quick burst against Jacob Lemoine (0-1) in the bottom of the first was all Frederick needed. Scott Kelly reached on a low throw from the hole at shortstop by Jake Hoover, Luke Becker followed with a walk and both scored on a double to left by Craig Dedelow. Jose Marmolejos drilled another double to the gap in right-center for a third run before Lemoine settled down and retired 11 of the next 12 batters.
Brent Teller is scheduled to start today for the Barnstormers (4-9) against Dustin Beggs (0-2). Game time is 5:55 p.m.
