The PIAA boys and girls lacrosse tournaments begin with first-round matchups Tuesday. Six Lancaster-Lebanon League teams will be in action, with three in girls and three in boys. The Manheim Township boys and girls look to get back to the state title game for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, two L-L teams are here for the first time ever and two others are here for the first time since 2012.
Below is a list of Tuesday's first-round matchups with sites and start times, along with a few trivia notes on each squad in relation to the state tournament.
Girls Class 3A:
3-1 Manheim Township (19-3) vs. 7-3 Pine-Richland (15-5), at Memorial Park Stadium, Mechanicsburg, 5 p.m.: The Lancaster-Lebanon League and District 3-3A champs begin their quest to return to the PIAA Class 3A title game for the second year in a row after reaching that state championship bout for the first time in program history last June. ...This is Manheim Township’s 11th-straight state tournament appearance. The Streaks are 11-10 all-time in the PIAA tournament, including 6-4 in first-round matchups. ...this is the second ever meeting between Manheim Township and Pine-Richland in the state tournament - the Streaks beat P-R 16-9 in a 2017 first-round meeting. ...P-R is making its third-straight PIAA tourney appearance and fifth appearance overall. It last won a PIAA first-round game in 2012.
Girls Class 2A:
3-3 Cocalico (16-5) vs. 4-1 Lewisburg (10-6), at Selinsgrove High School, 6 p.m.: Cocalico is in the state tournament for the first time since 2012 and third time overall. Lewisburg is here for just the second time ever, having lost a first-round PIAA contest back in 2013. Cocalico previously won PIAA first-round matchups in 2011 and 2012, falling in the quarterfinal round each of those years. ...This is the first-ever meeting between Cocalico and Lewisburg in the state tournament.
3-4 Lampeter-Strasburg (14-6) vs. 2-1 Wyoming Seminary, at Lake Lehman High School, 4 p.m.: After reaching the district semifinals for the first time in program history, the Pioneers are looking to continue their historic run in their first-ever state tournament appearance. This is Wyoming Seminary’s ninth-straight state tournament appearance, though it last won a PIAA playoff game in 2013.
Boys Class 3A:
3-2 Manheim Township (18-4) vs. 1-4 Springfield Delco (18-4), at Exeter Township High School, 6 p.m.: A year ago, Manheim Township became the first boys lacrosse team from District Three to reach and win the state title game. Now the defending state champion Blue Streaks look to repeat history. ...L-L Section One champ, league tournament runner-up and District 3-3A runner-up Manheim Township is in the state tournament for the 11th year in a row, holding a 14-9 all-time record in PIAA playoff games, including an 8-2 all-time mark in first-round matchups. ...This is the first-ever state tournament meeting between Manheim Township and Springfield Delco. ...S-D is in the PIAA tournament for the sixth year in a row and eighth time overall. It holds a 14-5 all-time win-loss record in the state tournament, including a 5-1 all-time mark in first-round matchups. S-D competed in Class 2A each of the last two years before jumping up to Class 3A this spring.
3-3 Hempfield (17-5) vs. 1-3 Radnor (16-6), at Penncrest High School, 4 p.m.: Hempfield is in the PIAA tournament for the first time since 2012 and looking for its first state playoff win since 2011. The L-L League tournament champion Black Knights could become just the second Hempfield team to ever win a playoff game with a victory on Tuesday, as the Knights are 1-4 all-time in state playoffs game, the lone win coming in the 2011 first round. ...this is the first-ever meeting between Hempfield and Radnor in the state tournament. ...Radnor is in the PIAA tournament for the first time since 2015 and fifth time overall. It is 8-3 all-time in states, including a 3-1 all-time mark in first-round games.
Boys Class 2A:
3-2 Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic (17-4) vs. 12-1 Cardinal O’Hara (16-4), at Germantown Supersite, Philadelphia, 4 p.m.: This season has been a series of firsts for the Cougars, as L-L Section Two runner-up LCD/LCHS made its first-ever L-L tournament appearance, then reached the district semifinals and district title game for the first time in program history. Now, they’re making their first-ever state tournament appearance. As a matter of fact, both teams in this matchup have never before appeared in PIAAs.
