George Markley outlasted Will Schreck in three sets, sending eighth-seeded Lancaster Country Day to a 3-2 upset of No. 1 seed Wyomissing in the District Three boys team tennis championships.

Markley recorded a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles in their Class 2A quarterfinal match Thursday at Hershey Racquet Club.

The Cougars also got a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles from Jonah Rebert.

Completing the victory was the team of David Del Terzo and Thomas Westbrook, who won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles.

Country Day goes on to the semifinals, where it will face No. 4 seed East Pennsboro, a 3-1 winner over Camp Hill Thursday. That match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hershey Racquet Club.

Also advancing in Class 2A was second-seeded Pequea Valley, which was a 4-0 winner over West York. The Braves got straight-set wins at singles from Brady Burns, Devon Clemmer and Hunter Winey, and Josh Gingerich and Josh Heinrich at No. 1 doubles.

Pequea Valley will take on No. 3 Conrad Weiser in the other semifinal at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Racquet Club West.

The Scouts defeated Lancaster Catholic 3-1 on Thursday. Miles Durrett got the Crusaders’ lone win, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Ross Conway suffered a tough loss at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

In Class 3A, there were just two first-round matches, but three L-L League teams were competing. No. 7 seed Elizabethtown advanced with a 5-0 win over Manheim Central, though the score was somewhat deceiving.

Two matches went to three sets, including an epic at No. 2 doubles where Evan Schneider and Chris Gartley outlasted Jacob Bidelman and Tony Stoltzfus 6-7 (0), 7-5, 7-6 (5)

Nacho Bartolome defeated Andrew Rajaratnam 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

E-town’s Ethan Lown and Trent McBride won in straight sets in singles, as did Jimmy Overmyer and Brecken Musser in doubles, though all featured some lengthy sets.

The Bears move on to Monday’s quarterfinals, facing No. 2 seed Hershey at 3:30 p.m. at Hershey Racquet Club.

Cocalico was ousted in the other 3A first-round match Thursday, falling 3-0 to Cumberland Valley.
