There would be no sweep for the U.S. women's field hockey team on Saturday.
While Team USA earned its first FIH Pro League victory with a 3-1 win over China in Lancaster last month, the Chinese got even over the weekend, shutting out the visiting Americans 4-0 at Changzhou's Wujin Hockey Stadium.
FIH No. 10 China cracked the scoreboard in the final minute of the first half before scoring twice in the third quarter. Four different players scored for the host nation, including Zhang Xiaoxue, who was named Player of the Match.
Xiaoxue fired a laser into the backboard in the 40th minute to give China a 3-0 lead before assisting on the final tally. Bringing the ball up from midfield, she found a wide open Gu Qiu on the right side for the easy score.
No. 12 Team USA was held to just two shots in the game, both of which came in the third quarter. The Americans earned their only penalty corner in the 44th minute, but captain Kat Sharkey's straight shot was stopped by Chinese goalie Li Dongxiao.
