USA vs Brazil PanAm Cup women

USA's Loren Shealy (4) takes a shot on the Brazil goal during first half action of a Pan American Cup womens pool play action at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in East Hempfield Twp. Wednesday August 9, 2017.

The U.S. women's field hockey team had its chances Thursday night, but struggled to get the ball over the goal line, falling to New Zealand 3-1 in FIH Pro League play.

After a scoreless first quarter, host New Zealand found the first goal of the game three minutes into the second. Olivia Merry redirected the ball into the cage for her Pro League-leading sixth goal in six games. Merry would assist on the Black Sticks' next goal, which Kirsten Pearce deflected in with 5:13 left in the quarter.

Ella Gunson score the final tally for No. 6 New Zealand, which moved into fifth place in the standings following the win.

No. 12 Team USA earned seven penalty corners in the game, finally scoring on their sixth attempt as the ball ricocheted around the circle and off the stick of Danielle Grega for her second goal in as many games.

Team USA has a little over two weeks until its next FIH Pro League game — and its first at Spooky Nook.

The Americans will actually host two countries over the span of three days, starting with No. 13 Belgium on Friday, March 29. The game marks the Red Panthers first trip to Lancaster since a test series last November, in which they won two out of three games.

Team USA, which is still looking for its first Pro League win, will then take on Olympic gold medalist and FIH No. 2 Great Britain on Sunday, March 31.

Tickets for both games are still available on USAFieldHockey.com.
