Recently, a group of extremists carried out a campaign to attack Planned Parenthood and the health care it provides. Countless mainstream media outlets have shown that its videos involving use of fetal tissue are clearly edited and heavily manipulated. In reviewing the tapes, Pulitzer Prize-winning PolitiFact noted, “Put simply, there’s no clear gotcha.”

Yet Republicans are using the videos as an excuse for politically motivated attacks on Planned Parenthood. It is disheartening to us that elected leaders of our party would use these discredited videos as an excuse to defund Planned Parenthood.

In a new Hart Research poll, 57 percent of voters expressed skepticism about the motivations of the Republican leadership in this matter. Only 28 percent believe Republicans “have legitimate concerns about Planned Parenthood and want to learn the truth.”

Many Republicans support common sense approaches to both spending and reproductive health. Without public/private partnerships utilizing established health centers such as Planned Parenthood, uninsured patients would be pushed to emergency rooms and private physicians at full cost to the government.

This is not an issue our fellow GOP leaders should be fighting. Defunding Planned Parenthood is a losing proposition — not just for the 2.7 million people it serves, but also with voters. We stand with Planned Parenthood.
