Marvin R. Hohenstein, age 94 of Willow Street, formerly of Buffalo, NY, and Bel Air, MD, passed away at Willow Valley on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. He was the husband of Ruth A. Keim Hohenstein, with whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage on February 15th. Marvin was born in Batavia, IL, son of the late Carl D. and Alma Hohenstein. He attended Bellevue Presbyterian Church in Gap and in the past was a member of North Park Lutheran Church of Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Batavia High School, class of 1941. He then attended Valparaiso University and enlisted in the Naval Officers College Program. While at Purdue University, he was called to active duty in the Navy, serving on the USS Minneapolis. After the Navy, he returned to Purdue University, graduating in 1947 with a BSEE degree. He spent 25 years in the public electronics industry before beginning his civil service career at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Marvin retired in September 2001 with 32 years of dedicated federal service and as the last remaining World War II veteran working at Aberdeen Proving Ground's Edgewood Area.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two children, Marcia wife of Ronald Tyrrell of Lancaster, and Peter husband of Jacquelyn Hohenstein of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren: Rachael wife of Michael Wehn of Terre Hill, Bethany wife of Andrew Atkinson of Oxford, Mary Tyrrell of Chambersburg, PA, Alexander Hohenstein of Charlotte, NC, and Gregory husband of Ellie Hohenstein of Charlotte, NC; five great grandchildren: Christopher, Simon and Elliott Wehn and Anna and Luke Atkinson; and a sister-in-law Esta Keim of Bowie, MD. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Hohenstein.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 27th at 11 a.m. at the Bellevue Presbyterian Church, 810 Newport Avenue, Gap, PA. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service.
