Irma Isabel Sheetz Shearer
Irma Isabel Sheetz Shearer, age 96, of 655 Willow Valley Square, Apt. L-406, Lancaster, PA died Sunday, July 15th of natural causes.
Irma was born August 7, 1915 in Enders, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania the youngest child of the late Edward E. and Ruth (Enders) Sheetz. Due to her mother's death at age 26, Irma was raised by her father's sister and husband, Margaret and Fred C. Keiffer, who resided in Elizabethville, PA in Upper Dauphin County.
Educated in the Elizabethville Public Schools and a 1936 graduate of Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public School Music, she also had additional training at the Teachers' College of Columbia University, New York City.
Irma taught music in the Williamstown Public Schools, Dauphin County, (elementary and secondary grades) for three years prior to her marriage in 1939.
She was employed by the West Hempfield and Conoy Township, Lancaster County, in the 1942-43 school year as music supervisor for thirteen public schools which she visited once a week.
After certification in elementary education Irma taught fourth grade in the Derry Township Public Schools from 1963 through retirement in 1979.
Irma was married to the Rev. Daniel L. Shearer, United Methodist Church pastor/administrator, for more than ten years and served as a clergy spouse from the date of her marriage on June 7, 1939 to the date of her death, a period of seventy-one years.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her sons Daniel Fred married to Norma C. Woolston Shearer, Halifax, PA, Fred Ceylon married to Jewel Kay Sheppard Shearer, Sr., Linglestown, PA, James M. Shearer, Palmyra, PA, and daughter Patricia Ann Shearer Larthey, Elizabethville, PA.
Three brothers, Olin, Ivan and Harlan Sheetz and a sister Zema Sheetz Miller preceeded her in death.
Also surviving are seven grandsons, a granddaughter, five great granddaughters, and three great grandsons.
There will be a viewing on Friday, July 20th from 10-10:45 AM at Hoover-Boyer Funeral Homes, Inc., Elizabethville, PA, followed by a graveside service at 11:00 AM at Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville. A Memorial Service of Death and Resurrection will be held at First United Methodist Church, 68 N. Church St., Ephrata, on Friday, July 27th at 11:00 AM. Visitation one hour before the service. Visitation ends at 10:55 and the Memorial Service begins promptly at the announced time. A light lunch will be served in First Church Fellowship Hall following the service.
