Charles "Chuck" F. Melchert, 82, of Lancaster, died on Monday, January 7, 2019. Born in Ridgeville Corners, OH, he was the son of the late Elmer John and Virginia Hepner Melchert. Chuck was the loving husband of Anabel Proffitt for 34 years.
Chuck graduated from Perrysburg HS, OH and matriculated to Capital University where he earned his B.A. in Drama. He achieved his Master of Divinity at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and received his PhD at Yale University in Christian Education.
With his PhD, he began teaching and was a professor at Colgate Rochester Divinity School before moving to St. John's University Newfoundland, Canada. Chuck became the Dean and subsequently the Director of the Doctoral Program at Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond, VA. He and Anabel moved to Lancaster and he became an Adjunct Professor at Lancaster Theological Seminary. Chuck wrote a book entitled Wise Teaching and published dozens of articles in Christian Education. During his years as adjunct professor in Lancaster he served as the Executive Secretary of the Association of Professors and Researchers in Religious Education. He was also a member of the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values.
A superb and gifted teacher, Chuck touched many lives with his wisdom and humor, his writings, his courses, his doctoral advising, and his Bible studies.
He was an active member of Wisdom's Table at St. Peter's U.C.C. He was an avid golfer and for many years enjoyed singing in the Ephrata Cloister Chorus.
He is survived by his son: Timothy (Lisa) Melchert of Boise, Idaho, two sisters: Judith Melchert, Columbus, OH and Priscilla Morgan, Ashland, OR, grandchildren: Skyler and Gavin, and first wife, Joyce Melchert, Boise, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene and son, Mark Melchert.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Chuck's Memorial Service at Wisdom's Table at St. Peter's UCC, 816 Buchanan Avenue, Lancaster, PA on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lance F. Mullins officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held at Lancaster Theological Seminary Memorial Garden at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Chuck's name may be made to Wisdom's Table at St. Peter's UCC.
