A 9-year-old girl was attacked and seriously injured by a stray dog that ran in to a Lancaster city home early Wednesday.

The incident happened in the 300 block of East Frederick Street, where the girl lives with her aunt, around 7:45 a.m.

Police said the dog entered the home when one of the residents opened the door to leave the house.

The stray dog went after the girl. The family's dog then jumped a gate and attacked the stray. An adult occupant of the home intervened and was able to pull the stray dog off the the child. The dog ran from the area and was last seen heading toward Lime Street.

Police said the girl suffered "severe" bites to the head. She was taken to a local hospital but then transferred to Hershey Medical Center for additional treatment.

Family friend Michael Christian said the dog tore off most of Alana Rivera's scalp and her ear. He said Thursday night that she is undergoing multiple surgeries but is stable.

Christian said Alana is a fourth-grade student at Ross Elementary School.

The dog is described as a pit bull-type with a muscular body. It is unknown if the animal is male or female. The dog is brown with white on the face, chest and part of the front legs.

As of Friday morning, the dog and the owner had not been found or identified.

Information about the incident was forwarded to the bureau's Dog Law Enforcement officer Yadira Garcia. She conducted multiple follow-up interviews at homes in the area that had dogs that were similar in description but none matched the description provided by the victim's family.

Anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the dog and/or owner of the dog should contact Garcia at 717-735-3453.

Authorities said persons should not approach the animal if it's seen loose on the street but should contact police at 717-664-1180 or 911. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can submit a tip through the city police Crimewatch page.
