UPMC Pinnacle is ending another service in Lancaster County, and it’s not one at the Lancaster city hospital it plans to close by March 1.
Bariatric and Metabolic Institute of Lancaster, also known as BMI of Lancaster, is located just across from UPMC Pinnacle Lititz in Warwick Township, at 1575 Highlands Drive, Suite 201.
Spokeswoman Danielle Gilmore said in an email Wednesday that the Lititz facility “is discontinuing the BMI of Lancaster program offered at the hospital” and is now referring patients to the Weight Loss Center at PinnacleHealth in Harrisburg.
Services for current patients will conclude in Lititz in March, she wrote, and future uses for the 3,800-square-foot space are being considered.
LNP records indicate the institute had been operating since at least mid-2011.
On why the local office is closing, spokeswoman Kelly McCall said in an email Friday that UPMC has "a responsibility to maintain local patient access while minimizing duplication of services," and that "BMI of Lancaster has experienced lower than anticipated patient volumes for the past year."
UPMC Pinnacle's surgeons have completed more than 5,000 bariatric procedures since 1998, she wrote.
UPMC Pinnacle is consolidating services at the Lititz hospital as it closes its sister facility in Lancaster, and has said it plans to expand some current programs there and expand collaborations.
Several surgical weight-loss programs remain in Lancaster County. Lancaster General Health’s has been in existence since 2008 and WellSpan’s since 2015, according to LNP records. Penn State Health reported offering the service at Hershey Medical Center in Dauphin County since 1979, and it's also available at Reading Hospital in Berks County.
