Raise the Wage

A handful of Lancaster County residents, including several Democratic candidates for office, rallied Tuesday afternoon in Penn Square to ask Harrisburg for an increase in the state's minimum wage.

Lancaster City Democratic Committee chairwoman Diane Topakian led the rally, which lasted about 15 minutes.

Christina Hartman, a candidate for U.S. Congressional District 16, joined state Senate candidate Greg Paulson and state House candidates Dale Hamby and Nick Selch in demanding a minimum wage hike.

“It’s just wrong” that people can work full time and still qualify for food stamps and other federal assistance, Topakian said.

Other states that have raised the minimum wage have not suffered the economic setbacks threatened by opponents of the increase, she said.
