Four people were seriously injured in a head-on crash that closed a portion of southbound Route 222 early Tuesday afternoon.
The accident occurred just after 1:30 p.m. in the area of East Church Street, near the Ephrata Township municipal line.
East Cocalico Township police said Franklina Anthony, 30, of Reading, was driving a Toyota sedan north and attempted a lane change.
She swerved to miss another vehicle, lost control, and crossed over the center median into the southbound lane where she struck a Jeep driven by Scott Rothenberger, 46, of Wilmington, Delaware, authorities said.
Anthony had to be freed from her vehicle by Denver and Reamstown fire crews. She and her passenger both suffered serious injuries and were transported by Reinholds and Fivepointville ambulances to Lancaster General Hospital.
Rothenberger and his passenger also were taken to LGH with serious injuries, police said.
The crash closed the highway for about an hour from Colonel Howard Boulevard to Route 322, according to a Lancaster County-Wide Communications supervisor.
Police said the accident remains under investigation.
