The massive Stehli Silk Mill, at Martha and Marshall avenues, was built in 1897 and operated as a mill until 1953.

Today, it sits empty as a York developer seeks new options for turning the property into apartments and commercial space.

During the mill's heyday in the late 1920s, its owner — a company founded in Switzlerland in 1837 — published a book "Mills of the Stehli Silks Corporation," featuring photos of its properties here and in Virginia and North Carolina.
