A Quarryville man was charged with arson after police say he used newspaper to set a mobile home on fire July 4, then watched it burn while drinking a beer.
Edwin Michael Schabach-Rivera, 33, of Quarryville was also charged with burglary, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and public drunkenness after the fire that destroyed a mobile home at 10 Laura Court in East Drumore Township.
According to police, Schabach-Rivera said he was upset with his ex-girlfriend and mother of his son because of the amount of time he was allowed to spend with his son.
Around 11 a.m. on July 4, Schabach-Rivera opened the unlocked door to the mobile home, went to the bedroom and put newspaper on the bed, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
He lit the newspaper on fire and then "walked over and made sure the neighbors were out of their house," police said.
Schabach-Rivera then went back to the driveway, sat in a lawn chair and "ate a sandwich and drank a beer while watching it 'go up,' " police said.
Nobody was home when the fire happened.
When a state trooper arrived to speak with him, he asked if the trooper had a gun and said he "may have [a gun] on his person," police said.
He then refused to show troopers his hands and resisted arrest, according to the affidavit.
Schabach-Rivera is in Lancaster County Prison on $250,000 bail.
