A New Providence woman has been charged with stealing money from a benefit fund established after the murders two years ago of a mother and daughter in southern Lancaster County.
Jennifer Anne Greenly, 41, was arraigned Monday on felony charges of theft and access device fraud and released on $5,000 unsecured bail, court papers show.
Greenly was the custodian of the Scheetz Family Benefit Fund, established with community donations after the murders of Lisa and Hailey Scheetz on June 11, 2015.
The Scheetz and the Thomas families were friends. Then came the indecent assault charges. Then came the fatal stabbings.
Kim Scheetz, the husband of Lisa and father of Hailey, went to authorities in November 2016 after he tried to withdraw money from the account and found there was a zero balance, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police later interviewed a bank employee who said Greenly opened the account and that Mr. Scheetz could only access funds via Greenly, the affidavit states.
A search warrant served at PNC Bank in June revealed that Greenly used money from the fund for personal expenses from Sept. 30, 2015 to May 26, 2016, state police said.
Greenly made payments to Verizon, Comcast, PPL Electric and for a car loan, officials said. A total of 12 transactions totaling $3,341.96 were made from the fund into accounts held by Greenly, according to police.
The account eventually charged off by PNC in July 2016 after it was had been overdrawn.
Greenly admitted during an interview with police Sept. 22 that she used the account for personal bills, police said.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18 before District Judge Stuart J. Mylin.
Lisa Scheetz, 44, and Hailey, 16, were stabbed to death in the early morning hours as they watched a movie in their basement apartment on Spring Valley Road. A 15-year-old daughter survived severe stab wounds to the chest, shoulder and back.
Leeton Thomas, 40, was convicted in June of two counts of first-degree murder and a count of attempted homicide and sentenced to death.
Lisa and Hailey Scheetz were witnesses in a sexual molestation case against Thomas, who was a former neighbor and family friend.
