Police are investigating what they say was a targeted home invasion and attempted robbery at West Lampeter Township residence last week.

Two males and a female — all armed — entered a home in the first block of West Kendig Road and ran off after a confrontation with several people inside July 9, police said in a news release issued after an LNP inquiry Monday.

One had a sawed-off shotgun, one had a pellet gun and one had a metal pipe or hatchet, police said. The suspects escaped before police arrived at about 12:45 a.m.

Resident John Maher, 18, said he was sitting in his room with five friends when they heard people coming up the stairs. He and the friends confronted the intruders. Maher got hit in the face with the shotgun and lost several teeth, he said.

"The boys are heroes," his father, Anthony Maher, told LNP. He heard the commotion from his bedroom across the hallway. Confused, he said he went into the hallway and saw what was going on.

The three eventually got away. One of the suspects was believed to be injured, police said.

They left in a car parked at Kendig Square shopping center, which is right across the street, according to John Maher.

The suspects were described as a tall, skinny white male, a short, stocky white male and a short, stocky white female. They were wearing gloves and items to hide their faces, police said.

Afterwards a shot was fired into the ground when a bystander tried to unload the shotgun left behind by the suspects, police said.

Anthony and John Maher said they are frustrated by the lack of progress in the investigation and want to know who is responsible.

The incident is still under investigation, police said.
