Nearly 20,000 chickens died in a Sunday morning fire in Strasburg Township.

The chicken house fire at 331 Walnut Run Road took nine engine companies, 13 tanker companies, two truck companies and about three hours to get under control, Refton Fire Co. Chief Wesley Hicks said Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

The building was one of two chicken houses on the property. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the single building. However, 19,750 chickens were in the building, Hicks said.

Hicks estimated damages at $670,000.

Outside of the loss of chickens, no further animal or human injuries were reported.
