Two people were injured in a five-car crash on Route 283 in East Hempfield Township Wednesday.

The chain-reaction crash occurred in the eastbound lanes, just west of Route 741, at 7:45 a.m., township police Lt. Tammy Marsh said. Traffic had crawled to a stop before the accident.

Two people were taken to Lancaster General Hospital with minor injuries, she said. Three children were also taken to the hospital for observation.

At one point, traffic due to the wreck backed up to Spooky Nook Road.

One lane of eastbound traffic was being allowed to go around the accident area until the road completely reopened at 8:45 a.m.

No charges have been filed, but police are investigating.
