On a day when some isolated heavy showers were expected, a rain band got stuck Friday afternoon around Mount Joy and Manheim, dropping a deluge of water that closed highways, stranded motorists and caused havoc for travelers at the start of the Labor Day weekend.

In Mount Joy, some 9 inches of rain fell between noon and 3 p.m., according to a local weather expert, turning parts of East Main Street into a torrent of water and overflowing onto Route 283, which was closed soon at Route 772 after 2 p.m., and remained closed into the evening.
