A fire heavily damaged a home and destroyed a garage in Lancaster Township on Monday.

The homeowner at 387 Abbeyville Road called for help after noticing two bags of leaves in his garage on fire, said Steve Roy, Lancaster Township assistant fire chief.

No home occupants or firefighters were injured, but five cats died, he said. Three dogs were rescued.

Heavy smoke from the 12:30 p.m. fire could be seen from two miles away. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes, Roy said.

A fire marshal was on scene around 2 p.m. to determine the fire's cause. Roy estimated damage to the house and contents at about $250,000.
