No charges will be filed against the driver who struck two boys pushing a wagon early Tuesday near Quarryville, according to state police.

Edwin D. Engle, 49, of Kirkwood, didn't see the boys until it was too late. He attempted to stop but couldn't avoid hitting them, authorities said Wednesday.

Police said the boys, ages 9 and 11, were dressed all in black. They weren't wearing any reflective material and had no lighting device.

The accident happened just before 6:30 a.m. on Hess Road, just south of Route 372 and about 1½ miles east of Quarryville Borough.

The boys were heading north when Engle's northbound pickup truck hit them from behind, according to Quarryville fire Lt. Jake Bachman.

Firefighters found one of the boys, suffering a leg injury, laying at the end of a driveway in front of 25 Hess Road, according to emergency dispatches.

The other boy had walked back the driveway to the home. Both boys were conscious and talking. Bachman said the boy found laying near the driveway didn't remember the accident.

Both children were taken to Lancaster General Hospital after the accident. State police described the 9-year-old's injuries as minor and said the 11-year-old suffered "moderate" injuries. The 11-year-old has been transferred to Hershey Medical Center.
