Real ID

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, every Pennsylvania resident must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, or another federally acceptable form of identification like a valid passport or military ID, to fly within the United States or enter military bases and most federal facilities.

REAL ID is optional. You can keep getting a regular driver’s license if you want, since you do not need a REAL ID to:

• Drive

• Vote

• Access hospitals

• Visit the post office

• Access federal courts

• Apply for or receive federal benefits

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, if you choose to get one, you will have to pay a one-time fee of $30, plus a renewal fee of $30.50, for a four-year non-commercial driver’s license or a photo ID.

If you already have a U.S. passport or passport card and want a REAL ID, you can wait until your next renewal to get one.

To apply, you must visit a Department of Motor Vehicles field office and present original or certified documents to prove your identity (birth certificate or U.S. passport), Social Security number and Pennsylvania residency (two different residency documents are required).

You will have to present additional original or certified documents if you have changed your legal name, such as a marriage certificate, court order or divorce decree issued by your county's family court.

If you are a lawfully present non-U.S. citizen, you can present the following documents:

• I-551 permanent resident card (green card)

• Passport with I-551 stamp

• Machine-readable immigrant visa

• Re-entry permit I-327

There are three options for obtaining a REAL ID:

• Order your REAL ID online if you have been pre-verified.

• Visit any PennDOT driver's license center, have your documents verified and imaged, and your REAL ID will be mailed to you within 15 business days.

• Visit a REAL ID center and receive your REAL ID--compliant driver’s license at the time of service.

Lancaster residents can obtain a REAL ID on the spot at a new driver’s license center located at 2090 Lincoln Highway East in East Towne Mall, East Lampeter Township.

Other PennDOT driver’s license centers that can issue REAL IDs over the counter include: Altoona, Bridgeville, Erie, King of Prussia, Norristown, Rockview (Pleasant Gap), Philadelphia (South 70th Street), Summerdale (Enola), Whitehall (Allentown), Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport.
