Fans of historic steam trains will have opportunities to see, ride and even fire up a rare steam locomotive across four weekends in Strasburg this fall.
The Norfolk & Western Class J 611 steam passenger locomotive will first arrive at Strasburg Rail Road from the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia, on Sept. 28, according to a news release announcing the string of events.
It will “reunite” with fellow Norfolk & Western locomotive Class M #475, which has been in operation in Strasburg since 1993. It is the only 4-8-0 class locomotive in operation in North America, according to the Strasburg Rail Road.
The visiting locomotive, the Class J 611, is one of 14 such engines ever built, according to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, and the only one of the models still in existence.
The special events at the Strasburg Rail Road include:
- September 28-29: A Norfolk & Western Railway Steam Reunion
- October 4-6: Railfan Photography Extravaganza
- October 12-14: Rail & Road: A Transportation Evolution
- October 19-20: At the Throttle of Norfolk & Western Steam
