About those sports scores

Q. A few questions. First, in sports, why was the State Score column, for both high school and colleges, discontinued? I can appreciate that a lot of folks are Lancaster County natives, however, there are some of us who aren’t and would like to know how are alma maters are doing. Why weren’t the PIAA high school basketball playoff brackets listed? I would also like to know why national news stories aren’t on the front page instead of local news events.

We asked copy editor Andy Berdy to answer.

A: Regarding the sports scores, he consulted with LNP sports editor Laura Thompson, who said: “In terms of football, we do still run the list of state scores sent by The Associated Press each Friday night. It usually appears on the same page as our local boxscores. And in each Sunday section in the fall, there is a college football score run broken down by East, Midwest, South and West. The AP does not send us a Pennsylvania-specific model.

“As a staff, we do each week also strive to compile and run a state roundup with information from Centennial Conference and PSAC games,” she added. “For basketball and other sports, however, the AP no longer sends us state score runs.

“As far as the PIAA brackets, with six boys and six girls brackets, we simply do not have space to run NCAA-style brackets. The full schedule of games we break down by class and run in our daily sports slate, and our staff also is sure to compile and run class-by-class results each day.”

With regard to front page stories, LNP’s priority is coverage of local news. We’re your hometown newspaper, and our most important local stories will always appear on the front page. We often do, however, reserve spots on Page 1 for the major national news stories of the day.
