Charlie Smithgall's fall shoot

Charlie Smithgall (center, in blue coat) sets aside a day in the fall for a big shoot in Drumore for friends and family.

Charlie Smithgall’s cannons have punctuated Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” at Long’s Park’s Independence Day celebration for decades.

They’ve starred in the 1993 movie “Gettysburg” and the 2012 movie “Lincoln.”

The former Lancaster city mayor and antique artillery collector decided last year to retire the cannons from the July 4th celebration. He still picks a day in the fall for a big shoot in Drumore for friends and family. This year there were cannons, Gatling guns and mortars.
