The court welcomed Queen Elizabeth I back to The Shire Saturday, as the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire opened for a new season at Mount Hope Estate & Winery, north of Manheim.

The first day of the season was filled with jousting and jesting, majesty and masks.

The Faire is following state health department guidelines, and advice from actors unions and other reopened theatrical events, in putting COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

Only a quarter of the usual number of visitors are allowed on the Faire grounds, and visitors, cast members and vendors are all asked to wear masks (except when performers are on stage, or when visitors are eating).

The Faire is celebrating 40 years since it started as a jousting tournament in a parking lot at Mount Hope.
