National Doughnut Day

Lots of doughnut shops and other stores are offering freebies and deals for National Doughnut Day on Friday.

Glazed or powdered, cake-like or gooey, doughnuts are certainly one of our favorite treats.

And Friday is the day to celebrate them, and maybe get a freebie or a deal at your local doughnut shop or other store.

It’s National Doughnut Day, a food holiday that can be traced back to Chicago in 1938.

The unofficial holiday was started to honor the Salvation Army’s “Doughnut Girls," who served along the front lines during World War I, giving soldiers free coffee and doughnuts, according to Salvationarmy.org.

These days, it also honors Americans’ seemingly unlimited appetite for doughnuts.

Here are some of the places you can get freebies and deals Friday. Note that all locations of some chain stores may not be participating in giveaways; check with your individual store for their participation.

Dunkin’: Get a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage.

Walmart: Bakery departments of more than 4,000 participating Walmart stores are giving away one free glazed doughnut per customer, while supplies last. The company expects to give away 1.2 million doughnuts Friday.

Duck Donuts: Participating franchises are holding Summer Beach Bashes, at which customers can receive one classic doughnut — bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar.

Stauffers of Kissel Hill Fresh Foods: Stauffers is offering a deal to complete your dozen. Buy any six doughnuts and get six free.

Krispy Kreme: While there are no stores in Lancaster County, you may be traveling in a neighboring region that has these stores. Krispy Kreme is trying to give away a million doughnuts Friday; so, customers can get one of any kind of doughnut free that day.
