It started in 1990 with a little boy’s wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister on the CB radio.

Forty truckers showed up that year to grant Matt’s wish, and thus the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy was born.

Sunday’s convoy, rolling out of Burle Business Park, will be more than 10 times as large as the first one, with 500 truckers and a lot of smiling children. (The event holds the Guinness world record for largest truck convoy.)

Make-A-Wish children don’t just watch the action, they ride in the big rigs with the truckers. Who wouldn’t like that?

A previous Make-A-Wish Mother's Day Truck Convoy takes Route 222's right lane.

Since those early days, the event has grown to include a festival for families, as well. Live music, food, games, an auction and a wonderfully upbeat spirit await visitors from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Burle Business Park grounds at 1000 New Holland Ave.

Admission is free, but bring your wallet for food, auction items and a donation to a worthy cause.

Parking with shuttle service is offered at Grandview Plaza, 790 New Holland Ave., and at Lancaster Catholic High School, 650 Juliette Ave.

The convoy’s departure, always a sight to see, is at 1:30 p.m.
