A retired Elizabethtown High School teacher will serve up to 6 years in prison for sexual abuse of a local girl nearly 20 years ago.

Robert A. Evans, 63, pleaded guilty Friday to sexually abusing the 11-year-old girl in 1994 and 1995 — in exchange for a 3-to-6-year term in state prison.

Evans, a science teacher from 1973 until his retirement in 2006, will also serve 4 years on probation and register his whereabouts with police for the rest of his life.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the most serious charge of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child.

Evans, a balding man with a goatee, also admitted to offering the girl $10,000 not to press charges.

Lancaster County Judge Dennis Reinaker accepted the plea deal and will formally sentence Evans after an evaluation is done on his tendency to re-offend.

Evans has been free on $200,000 unsecured bail since Detective Clair Martin filed charges in July.

Evans also was charged with threatening to kill Martin by shooting him from a distance. That charge also was dropped in the plea agreement.

The victim was believed to be a student in the district, but not in Evans’ classes.

Police were initially notified in April 2013 after Lancaster County Children and Youth received a report from the victim, now 31.

Evans, told the judge he earned his master's degree, but declined to make further statement in court Friday.
