An original garment designed and made by Lancaster dressmaker Debby Spence was among five winners in Thread magazine’s “Inspired by Art” competition.

Spence’s dress, inspired by a colorful paper collage by the French artist Henri Matisse, captured the category of most successful adaptation.

This latest challenge was to design and sew a sheath-style dress, inspired by any work of art. Spence’s design was selected from 40 entries, judged on technical mastery and innovative design.

Threads sponsors an annual design challenge with the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals. The winners of this latest challenge will be featured in the June/July 2016 issue of Threads.

Spence, who also was a Threads competition winner in 2014, runs a custom sewing and design business in Lancaster, Debby Spence Ace Dressmaker.
