Gannett Co. Inc. has acquired 12 news organizations from Digital First Media, it was announced Monday.
The organizations changing hands include five in Pennsylvania — the York Daily Record, York Dispatch, Hanover Evening Sun, Lebanon Daily News and Chambersburg Public Opinion.
The balance of the news organizations in the transaction are in New Mexico and Texas.
To accomplish the deal, Gannett swapped its stake in 11 California newspapers it owns jointly with Digital First for the newspapers in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Texas.
Though Gannett’s statement only mentioned one York paper — the Daily Record — Daily Record Publisher Sara Glines said the Dispatch is included in the transaction.
The Dispatch and the Daily Record have had a joint operating agreement since 1990, by which they share production, circulation and advertising functions but have separate newsrooms.
Gannett, based in McLean, Virginia, is the publisher of USA TODAY and 81 community newspapers, as well as television stations, websites and Mountville-based Clipper Magazine, which it bought in 2003.
