Gettysburg Ghost Tours

Halloween is just around the corner, and nothing goes together better in October than history and haunted stories.

This week’s segment of the “Haunted Lancaster” series, sponsored by, LNP and LancasterOnline, will take a look at the haunted historical tours that are offered locally and within an hour’s drive of Lancaster.

Historical sites are intriguing and give a glimpse of days gone by. During many of these tours, the stories of yesteryear are brought to life.

When: Meets nightly at 8 p.m. through November.

Where: Penn Square in Lancaster.

Cost: $15 per person, $10 ages 4-12.

Details: The 90-minute tour leads attendees through the streets of Lancaster as stories range from intriguing to scary and creepy. Tour owner Tim Reeser and his family have been holding ghost tours in the area for 20 years and do much of the research themselves.


When: Meets at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through November, with an 8:45 p.m. time slot as needed.

Where: Main and Decatur streets.

Details: The 90-minute lantern-lighted tours highlight the lesser-known stories of Strasburg’s history and are led by costume-clad tour guides. Owned by Tim Reeser, author of “Ghost Stories of Lancaster, PA” as well as ghost story books covering Philadelphia; Tampa, Florida; St. Petersburg, Florida; and Ocean City, New Jersey.


When: 6-8 p.m. Oct. 20 and Oct. 27; 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and Oct. 28.

Where: 963 Crystal Cave Road, Kutztown.

Details: Guides, wearing Victorian clothing, present the original Crystal Cave tour from the 1870s. Hear ghost stories, folklore and history of Crystal Cave guided by the glow of hand-held lanterns. Not suitable for children under the age of 8.

Cost: $12-$20.


When: Varies throughout October.

Details: Hosted by Gettysburg Ghost Tours, there are more than 10 one-hour tours offered throughout the Gettysburg area. Each tour, according to its website, has a designated storytelling theme of either “Cemetery Tour,” “Black Cat Tour,” “Live or Die Tour” or “Extreme Ghost Hunt.” Each tour has a historical tie to the area.


When: 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 18, 21, 25, 29 and 30.

Where: Continental Square, York.

Cost: $20 on Oct. 18, 25 and 30; $25 on Oct. 21 and 29.


Details: The 90-minute walking tour, led by Meg Feeser, winds through the downtown with stops at locations that are said to have a haunted history.


When: 6 p.m. Oct. 21.

Where: 2200 block of Kutztown Road, Reading.

Cost: $13 per person.

Reservations: Not required.

Details: Located at the “twin churches,” this graveyard is rumored to have paranormal activity. Reading-area historian Charles Adams will lead the tour, tell stories of those buried there and explore the possibility of the reported hauntings.
