Ralph was a self-employed contractor. He enjoyed boating, especially on the Chesapeake Bay in Cecil County, Maryland.

William Darlington Essick

William Darlington Essick of Lancaster died at home on April 17, 2014. Bill was born in Lancaster on May 31, 1945 to DeWitt and Clara Essick, and grew up in Millers-ville. From the age of five he was a devoted Phillies fan. He graduated from Lancaster’s J.P. McCaskey High School in 1963. In 1965, he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country as a cryptanalytical specialist and traffic analyst in the Army Security Agency. Bill was first stationed at Udorn in Thailand (and to the end of his life was an enthusiastic participant in the Udorn vets’ email group). He was later stationed in Fukuoka, Japan, where he met Keiko Miyake. Bill and Keiko married at the U.S. Consulate in Fukuoka in September 1969, shortly before his honorable discharge. They made their home in Lancaster for the rest of their lives, except for a stint in State College while Bill earned his M.A. in history from Penn State. Their daughter Kathy was born in 1970; son John was born in 1974. Bill’s grandson and namesake, William, was born in 2010.

Barbara M. French

Barbara M. French, 101, of Willow Valley Retirement Communities, Lancaster, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 20, 2014. She was the widow of Lawrence P. French. Born in Trenton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Ethel Disborough Manser. A graduate of the University of Delaware, she taught 2nd grade in the Wilmington, DE public schools for many years. She was a guide at the Hagley Museum in Greenville, DE for 15 years. A well known watercolor artist, she was a member of the Studio Group in Wilmington, DE for many years. She had a lifelong love for growing, arranging and painting flowers and over the years painted and took classes at Longwood Gardens. She was a member of the Women's Garden Club of Lancaster, as well as a former member of the Iris Club.
