A Barbie trout
Six-year-old Jaylynn Doulin of Holtwood got the whole opening day of trout season experience. She camped out the night before along Conowingo Creek near Wakefield with her parents, Melissa and Jarron Doulin. They had s'mores and hog dogs. Fortunately, when their parents were buying supplies for the roast, they also bought a new fishing net. The next morning, Jaylynn hooked a huge trout -- on a toy Barbie fishing kit with a rod that stretched a mere 2 feet, 6 inches. When Jaylynn expertly started backing up to drag the trout to the bank and her parents realized how large it was, her dad leaped into the creek and netted the fish. It turned out to be a 22-inch, citation-size palomino rainbow trout. Her parents are having the fish mounted to preserve the memory. While catching a trophy trout on a toy rod may seem unlikely, in 2008, a North Carolina man who held his daughter's Barbie rod while she went to the bathroom caught a state-record 21-pound channel catfish from a pond.
