Five from same troop earn Eagle rank
It's a big deal when a single member of a Boy Scout troop wins the Eagle Scout award.
But what about when five Eagle Scouts in the same troop win the highest honor in scouting?
That's what happened with Troop 16, chartered to St. Joseph Catholic Church of Lancaster, which presented five scouts with their Eagle Scout awards this school year.
The scouts, in order of earning the award, are James J. Dougherty IV, Patrick A. Sands, Andrew K. Magloughlin, Joseph D. Evans and Rodrigo A. Castro.
Three of the scouts (Dougherty, Sands and Magloughlin) are members of St. Joseph, 440 St. Joseph St.
Here are details on each of the scouts:
n Dougherty is the son of James and Mum Dougherty, of Lancaster, and is a graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, where he played lacrosse. He now attends Shippensburg University.
For his Eagle project, he organized and started a Red Cross club at his school, serving as president the first year.
n Sands is the son of Merv Sands and Diane Boomsma, of Lancaster, and also graduated from Lancaster Catholic, with an award for highest math average. He now attends Millersville University.
For his Eagle project, Sands organized an animal-supply drive, collecting food, toys, bedding and other items and donating them to the Humane League.
n Magloughlin is the son of Marie Magloughlin and Kevin Magloughlin, both of Lancaster, and is now a junior at Hempfield High School, where he's enrolled in honors classes.
For his Eagle project, he planned and made games, toys and other items for the Hempfield Youth Rec Center, which he had attended.
n Evans is the son of Patrick and Nina Evans of Columbia, and is a senior at Hempfield. He is a lifeguard at the Mountville pool and coaches swim lessons.
For his Eagle project, Evans installed a flagpole and plaque commemorating the location of the old Ironville school, near Ironville United Methodist church.
n Castro is the son of Jose Castro, of Peru, and Maria Del Carpio, of Lancaster, and stepson of Thomas Blaszczyk, of Lancaster. Castro graduated from Lancaster Catholic, where he was a member of the state championship football team, and now attends St. Joseph University.
For his Eagle project, Castro renovated and painted the gym and youth center at his church, Lancaster's San Juan Bautista Catholic Church.
All of the scouts had earned the Arrow of Light Award with Cub Scout Pack 16, and Dougherty, Sands, Magloughlin and Evans also are members of the Order of the Arrow.
Also, Dougherty, Sands and Magloughlin have earned the Catholic religious youth award, Ad Altari Dei.
