Denlinger consummate team player for Hempfield
Alley notes High scores Note
Lisa Denlinger demonstrated the essence of the word team last year when she stepped up for one of her teammates.
High school bowlers work and sacrifice many hours of practice during the year so they might qualify for the big tournaments at the end of the scholastic season. And this Hempfield High School junior is no exception.
After qualifying for the 2012 Lancaster-Lebanon League Singles Championship, this young bowler did something that is a measure of a great teammate -- she gave her qualifying position to another bowler.
According to Denlinger, Hempfield bowling coach Andy Wise listed her and four other varsity bowlers as qualifiers for the championships.
But senior Austin Starry, who bowled with the team for three years, had not earned a spot, he said, because of an "unfortunate car accident."
That was all Denlinger needed to hear.
She informed her coach that she wanted to step down to give Starry a chance to compete. Wise told her to think about it and talk to her parents.
"I knew there was nothing that could change my mind and that my parents would be proud of my decision," Denlinger said. "I didn't have to think about it because I knew it was the right thing to do."
When she told Starry of her decision, she said, "his face was priceless," and he gave her a big hug.
"I will always remember this because it made me feel amazing to be able to give something to someone that meant so much to him," she said.
"It was neat to see an individual be such a caring teammate to put her own personal goals aside, and, to allow this young man who had been injured to compete," Wise said.
Now, a year later, this Hempfield kegler is competing in the big tournaments with a greater satisfaction for the decision she made.
Background: A daughter of Doreen and Keith Denlinger, Lisa works part-time at Auntie Anne's.
Leagues/averages: Saturday Morning League 194; High School (L-L League) 198.
High scores: Single 280 (June 8, 2012; series 730 (against Manheim Township) Dec. 12, 2012.
Achievements: Two Tony Murse Awards; second in L-L League Team Championship 2012-13 season, Mixed Scratch States Champions in 2012 with teammates Eric Erb, Austin Young and Brendon Yarnall; top series and game in Section One girls.
Favorite bowling center: Leisure Lanes.
Type of bowling ball: Defiant, Crossroads.
The persons who taught me the most are: Sue Schickel, who got me started; Gary Brooks and Scotty Ulmer, who helped with my technique; and, most importantly, my head coach (Andy) Wise, who has helped me tremendously with my mental game, which I believe is most important.
My high school bowling experience is great because: I love the intensity and the energy during the match. And the thrill when you know you threw a good ball, and turned around to see how pumped it made your team.
Great teams have: Members who are team players and pick each other up.
Bowling has helped me: Keep my focus and meet many other great bowlers and competitors who I can now call my friends.
My interest in the sport began: I was 8 and bowled at my friend's birthday party. When I discovered the Saturday Morning League, I decided to join.
My secret to success is: Remembering that one bad shot does not make or break the game, and to analyze your shot off the approach and clear your head on the approach.
Suggestions for others: Work on your mental game first because if you can not keep your composure, you will not succeed in bowling.
I think other bowlers would describe me as: Very competitive with myself, and a little too hard on myself, but always trying to do what is best for the team.
My long-term bowling goal is to: Bowl a perfect game and an 800 series.
The funniest thing that happened in bowling was: Last year in districts at Berks Lanes. The ball machine started smoking and my coach gave me one of his many life lessons: In case of emergency, save the No. 1 person, yourself.
People would be most surprised to learn that: I want to go to Penn State for biomedical engineering.
When I'm not bowling you will find me: Working at Auntie Anne's or hanging out with my friends.
