PIAA pairings announced
Since District 12 joined the PIAA in 2004 and forced a reconfiguring of state playoff bracket, local schools have gotten used to the possibility of being shipped out west for state-tournament basketball games.
But being in the western half of the bracket and facing another District Three school?
That's a new one, at least for Lancaster Catholic's girls' team, which will play Susquehannock (18-8) in Saturday's first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Yes, the same Susquehannock that upset the Crusaders (26-2) eight days ago in the District Three Class AAA quarterfinals.
Susquehannock lost to Palmyra on Saturday for the 3-AAA championship.
Catholic won twice last week to earn fifth place in District Three, and, it turned out, a chance for revenge.
The rest of the first-round matchups involving local teams:
Boys -- Class AAAA, McCaskey (District Three third seed, 26-3) vs. Coatesville (1-5, 23-7) Saturday.
Class AAA, Donegal (3-3, 26-2) vs. Wilkes-Barre GAR (2-2, 17-10), and Lancaster Catholic (3-7, 18-9) vs. Johnstown (6-1, 15-8), both games Friday.
Class A, Lebanon Catholic (3-1, 18-7) vs. Sankota Freedom Academy (12-3, 13-10) Friday.
Girls -- Class AAAA, Manheim Township (3-6, 21-4) vs. Philadelphia central (12-2, 15-6) Friday.
Class AA, Annville-Cleona (3-3, 16-10) vs. Neumann-Goretti (12-1, 12-11) Friday.
The official brackets, including times and sites, will be announced by the PIAA today.n
