Pet of the Week
On the mend, Herbert needs a loving home By Laura Vinroe, Humane League of Lancaster County
When Herbert was brought to the Humane League as a kitten, our staff noticed he wasn't making use of his two hind legs.
After multiple tests and X-rays, the kindest option was to remove one of his legs as it was causing discomfort and slowing him down. He recovered quickly from surgery and was welcomed into a loving foster home where he continued physical therapy.
Even though he can use his back leg, Herbert's preferred method of moving is still scooting. Now back at the shelter, Herbert consistently uses his litter box and he is friendly towards other cats. Although he will always need to be monitored for sores, Herbert is a very happy, healthy 9-month-old who loves to snuggle and play. Now fully recovered physically, Herbert needs someone to cure his lonely heart.
Herbert is available for adoption at the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East. Many of our available animals can also be viewed online at humaneleague.com. Regular shelter hours are 3-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The shelter is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Call the league at 393-6551.
From Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, the league received 12 dogs and 12 cats. Eleven dogs and 32 cats were adopted; four stray cats were reclaimed by their owners; two cats were transferred to other rescue organizations. Previously featured dog Gimli has been adopted.
The league is partnering with Ephrata Area School District to hold a low-cost vaccine clinic for dogs and cats 8 a.m. to noon March 9 at the Agri-Science Learning Center Pavilion, 189 S. Market St., Ephrata.
Cost for this first-come, first-served event is $10 per dog or cat. All dogs must be on a leash, and all cats must be in a secure carrier. Dog licenses will also be available for purchase.n
