Rowland eyes another title for Spartans
L-L League leaders High scores
Garden Spot senior Sirena Rowland stepped up to the lanes this season with the determination of helping her team win another Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title.
Currently, the Spartans are doing just that.
At Week 13, Garden Spot leads Elizabethtown and Lampeter-Strasburg in a tight race.
Said Rowland, "We've been section champs every year I've bowled on the team, and that gives us something to work even harder for every year."
She added that her team is a family who "always support one another and pick up the slack when anyone is struggling."
This GS kegler enjoys her position as the high school student council president in which her group "runs food drives and a Mini-THON to raise money for kids with cancer." She also volunteers as a junior auxiliary member of the American Legion.
Background: Sirena, who is the daughter of Deb Rowland-Delp and Charles Delp, works part-time at Yoder's Restaurant. She plans to attend Penn State University this fall.
Leagues/averages: High school 192, Dutch Summer Adult/Jr. 199.
High scores: Single 299, past summer at Dutch Lanes; series 705, junior year of high school in a match against Cocalico at Blue Ball Lanes.
My greatest moment in the sport was: Qualifying in regionals to be a state finalist for high school bowling in my junior year.
Achievements: Eastern regionals finalist 2012, state finalist 2012, boys' team Icebreakers champion for two years in a row (2011, 2012).
Favorite bowling center: Leisure Lanes.
Type of bowling ball: Storm.
The persons who taught me the most are: Harry Charleson, my high school bowling coach, and Gary Brooks.
Bowling has helped me: Build a strong mentality and keep calm in stressful situations. There are very frustrating times when you miss a shot or you lose a game, but you have to forget about it and put it in the past to do your best the next frame.
My interest in the sport began: When I was about 7 years old in the after-school program at Blue Ball Lanes.
My secret to success is: Staying calm and not putting myself down. Everyone is going to have a bad game here or there, but you have to bounce back and give it your all every shot.
Suggestions for others: Don't give up on the sport after one or two tries. Bowling is a lot harder than most people think and it takes time and practice to become great at the sport, just like any other sport.
I think other bowlers would describe me as: Focused. I'm always thinking about the next shot and how I'm going to finish the game.
My long-term bowling goal is to: Possibly bowl in college, and also go out to the Junior Gold tournament.
The funniest thing that happened in bowling was: Face-planting at the foul line in the PA State tournament. I usually slide, but the bowling center at states had sticky approaches and I wasn't prepared to just stop. So, all of a sudden, I was falling forward on my face. At the time it wasn't funny, but looking back I always laugh.
This brings me good luck in the sport: My teammate Matt Martin and I always have a secret handshake before every match. This gets me ready to throw good shots.
When I'm not bowling you will find me: Working at Yoder's or working out at the gym. I'm also an avid reader, so you will almost always find me with a book.
If I could, I would change this in the sport: I would make every oil pattern a challenge shot to find out who can handle the pressure and precision needed to score well on a challenge shot.
Alley notes: Perfect games were rolled by Adam Werner at Clearview and DJ Thatcher, Kevin Kahler and Ken Harmes at Leisure. Near Perfect games were rolled by Mike Bonham and Tim Weaver (298) at Leisure. High series (men, 800; women, 700) was rolled by Wendi Simet at Leisure.
