Larsen wins 2nd straw poll for judge

Prosecutor Christopher P. Larsen -- one of four GOP candidates for the county's single vacant judgeship -- was victorious Saturday in a straw poll conducted among members of the Lancaster Township and Lancaster city Republican committees.
The straw poll was the second of six to be held by area GOP committees leading up to the Feb. 19 endorsement by the Republican Committee of Lancaster County.
The first assistant prosecutor in the county District Attorney's Office, Larsen received 17 out of 30 votes cast -- all from Lancaster city committee members.
Merrill Spahn Jr., the county's deputy chief public defender and a partner with the law firm Spahn & Encarnacion, garnered seven votes -- five from Lancaster city members and two from Lancaster Township members.
The other two GOP candidates vying for the seat being vacated by Judge Louis Farina -- who turns 70 this year and can't run for an additional 10-year term -- are defense lawyer Thomas B. Sponaugle, who got five votes, and Magisterial District Judge Jayne F. Duncan, who received one.
Spahn won the first straw poll, held Thursday among GOP committee members in Hempfield and Penn Manor, by capturing 21 of 45 overall votes.
Last month, the Lancaster Bar Association rated Spahn and Duncan "highly recommended" and Larsen and Sponaugle "recommended."n
