Skeeters sweep 'Stormers Wednesday's Boxes LANCASTERSUGAR LAND LANCASTERSUGAR LAND Atlantic League BY MICHAEL SUDHALTER, Correspondent
SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Former Lancaster Barnstormers outfielder Adam Godwin is enjoying his new digs in the warm Texas sun and giving his former teammates a tough welcome to the Lone Star State.
Godwin, the center fielder and leadoff hitter for the Sugar Land Skeeters, went 2 for 5 with an RBI and scored the winning run on a passed ball in a 6-5, 10-inning victory over the Barnstormers on Wednesday afternoon at Constellation Field.
"I love it in Texas -- I'm from Alabama, and it's a good fit," Godwin said. "I have a lot of respect for (Lancaster manager) Butch (Hobson) and that team. Between the lines, it's all business. Off the field, I have a lot of good friends over there."
Godwin, who played part of the 2011 season and all of the 2012 campaign with Lancaster, then scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by fellow outfielder Steve Moss in the nightcap of the doubleheader, a 5-0 Sugar Land victory.
That extended the Skeeters' (11-2) Freedom Division lead to 2.5 games over Somerset and four over the Barnstormers (7-6), who have lost six of their last seven and were shut out for the third time this season.
Halfway through the six-game series, Sugar Land has won all three games.
"Sugar Land is hot right now -- they've got a fine club," Hobson said. "In the second game, we just didn't hit enough. (Brian) Grening gave us a chance to win. We'll enjoy the off day, come out here Friday and pitch better."
In the early game, the Barnstormers led 5-0 in the fourth inning. It was the second time in as many games that Lancaster lost a game in which it led by at least four runs.
Lancaster second baseman Olmo Rosario led the Barnstormers, finishing 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI. Shortstop Kevin Howard was 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
Reliever Jason Urquidez (1-1) took the loss for the Barnstormers, while Sugar Land reliever Roy Corcoran (2-0) picked up the victory.
In the nightcap, Sugar Land scored two runs in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively.
Skeeters third baseman Michael Rockett finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double, and designated hitter Josh Pressley hit a solo home run to center field.
The Barnstormers had seven hits.
