No bones about it, KFC Boneless is tasty
This week I reached out for Original Recipe Boneless -- neat and quick -- at the world's No. 1 chicken shack, KFC, with some 15,000 locations around the globe … and in all 50 states here at home.
KFC is blaring that Original Recipe Boneless is "revolutionary" -- I'll just say "bigger." KFC already has chicken tenders and bites, so consider this an upgrade for the "size matters" crowd.
You know our mantra in the drive-thru: Less is NOT more. More is more. Make everything extra-large. We can spend one more summer covering up at the beach. We'll get in shape next year.
Here's the blueprint: deep-fried boneless, skinless chicken fillets with the Colonel's Original Recipe breading.
Total calories: 200 (for a white-meat breast fillet). Fat grams: 8. Dietary fiber: 1 g. Sodium: 610 mg. Carbs: 6 g. Protein: 24 g. Manufacturer's suggested retail price: $4.99 for two pieces of chicken, plus one side dish (coleslaw, that's an easy one), one buttermilk biscuit and a medium soft drink. LOVE those biscuits.
You also can get Original Recipe Boneless dark-meat fillets, which is my pick. Chicken thighs are tons more flavorful and juicy than boring, dry, I'm-sick-of-them chicken breasts. Dark-meat Original Recipe Boneless is the same price as white-meat, but you pay the price in extra calories and fat. A dark-meat fillet has 250 calories and 14 fat grams. But it's worth the guilt.
The shift in American taste from traditional bone-in chicken to boneless is unstoppable. Last year, for the first time, sales of boneless wings topped regular wings. This should be an outrage, particularly for literalists who scream, "Boneless wings are NOT wings!" There are more important fights.
Some drive-thru analysts see a day when shares of boneless chicken exceed those of full-bodied chicken, even at KFC, which has filled a few billion buckets with chicken as Mother Nature intended throughout the years.
KFC Original Boneless is a smart product. It's quite delicious. Even the white-meat fillets are flavorful. Best of all, both white- and dark-meat Original Recipe Boneless pieces are made with whole breast fillets and thigh fillets. These are not chewed 'n' glued, particleboard, plywood chicken masses. If I watch that video of how chicken nuggets are made one more time, I'm going meatless, which still might allow chicken nuggets in my diet.
Boneless will appeal to younger guests who've grown up in a world of McNuggets and non-waste, recyclable goods. It's true -- dealing with bone-in chicken can be a hassle. There are bones to throw out. Maneuvering your mouth around bones leaves your chicken glistening like morning dew, only disgusting. And there's always chicken left on the bone. I despise that tendon on drumsticks.
KFC Original Boneless leaves me wanting more … how about Extra Crispy Boneless? Spicy Extra Crispy Boneless? If Taco Bell can reinvent itself around Doritos chips, KFC has a whole new frontier with boneless.
