Safe option for abused women
TO THE EDITORS:
Growing up in a safe and loving home in Lancaster County, I always thought that my experience of domestic abuse was rare. I now know, unfortunately, domestic violence is common.
Nearly one out of four women will experience some type of domestic violence in their lifetime. Young women are especially at risk.
I want to remind your readers that they are not alone. There is help available. Lancaster has an excellent support system in place called the Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County. The hotline number is 299-1249.
DVS can provide emergency shelter, transitional shelter, legal assistance and counseling for you and your children, and they can connect you with other resources and assistance. People are standing by, ready to help you to safety.
I know from my own experience that it is a hard step, and it never seems like the right time. So, please take that step now, while you still can.
