Free osteoporosis screenings slated
Lancaster General Health offers free ultrasound scans of the heel, which provides a screening assessment useful in identifying patients who are at risk for developing osteoporosis and for assessing their risk for possible future fractures. The test is offered to post-menopausal women under age 65 at LG Health's Osteoporosis Testing Facility at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion, 2100 Harrisburg Pike. Patients will receive a copy of their test results, which will be shared with their family physician. A doctor's order is not needed.
If the ultrasound heel scan finds a patient to be at moderate to high risk for developing osteoporosis, a DEXA scan (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) test will be recommended. This test is a simple, non-invasive X-ray on the lower spine, hip and/or wrists that measures bone density. It is recommended that all persons over 65 should undergo a DEXA scan.
To make an appointment for a free ultrasound heel scan, call LG Health scheduling at 544-3759. DEXA scans are offered at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion; at LG Health's Kissel Hill Outpatient Center, 51 Peters Road, Lititz, and at LG Health's Norlanco Outpatient Center, 424 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown.
