Body found in Susquehanna identified as Reading man
A body found Thursday in the Susquehanna River near Conestoga Township has been identified as Jose Suarez-Lopez, 57, who went missing on April 13.
"He has been positively identified," Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Steve Diamantoni said. "We don't need dental records, and next of kin have been notified."
The Reading man had been boating with his girlfriend, Bertha Castro, when their boat overturned near Jacks Island, south of the Safe Harbor Dam. Castro was rescued.
Lopez's body was found in the river, just north of the Pequea Marina, according to Kevin Boyer, assistant fire chief of Rawlinsville Fire Company.
Suarez-Lopez died accidentally of freshwater drowning, Diamantoni said after an autopsy was conducted Friday.
His body was not found sooner most likely because it remained submerged in the cold river water before the temperature rose in the last week or so, the coroner said.
