Common Core an intrusion by government
TO THE EDITORS:
It's here! Due to begin September 2013 for Pennsylvania kids. Under the radar since first being brought in mid- 2010 by our Department of Education and the governor at the time. Initially offered as stimulus/taxpayer money, the public has been unaware of this new, untested, untried federal program.
No wonder local school officials are unaware of any public pushback. They don't know about it. And neither do our legislators who could still vote to reject it.
Having attended a public meeting in York and doing some reading at TruthinAmerica.com I was happy to see the topic on Lancaster Newspapers' front page on April 4. The article was far from complete on the topic. How can a new federal education initiative affecting our kids and our country not be presented to us four months before implementation next school year? There is only one answer. They want no public scrutiny, no debate.
This program was a product of two private organizations under the Achieve Inc. name. Funded partly by taxpayers and a few private groups, (G.E., NBC and the Gates Foundation), it will cost the state at least $650 million over seven years, plus testing. You can see some sample curricula at Education Station retail stores for K-4 grades.
Content will be cut, students will be asked to state the relevance of learned concepts, cursive will be eliminated, the teaching of Euclidean geometry and lowest common denominator as a basis for fractions manipulation will drastically change. Kids will be asked to question things every day, relativism as its basic beginnings.
An online petition at "No Common Core for PA - Freedom Works" will help stop this federal intrusion into local controls of what and how our kids are taught.
