Red Rose 4-H learns about firefighting
Jeremy Shaffner visited the Red Rose 4-H Community Club recently at the Farm & Home Center in Lancaster to educate members on fire safety and prevention.
Shaffner has served as a volunteer firefighter for 14 years and has been a career firefighter for eight years. He works for both Montgomery County and Manheim Township in Lancaster County.
Three stations make up the Manheim Township Fire Department: Eden Fire Company, which has yellow trucks; Neffsville Fire Company, which has red trucks; and Manheim Township Fire Company, which has green and blue trucks.
There are 100 volunteers among the three stations.
Shaffner said his gear weighs 75 to 100 pounds with the air pack. Fire clothing is rated to withstand 1,200 degrees, but firefighters try to avoid temperatures higher than 800 degrees.
Firefighters have to be able to suit up in less than a minute, so their gear and clothing is carefully stored so they are able to dress quickly for a fire call.
